A MOTHER shows off her miracle daughter – who grew OUTSIDE the womb.
Meera Thangarajah amazed doctors carrying out a Caesarean section when they found little Durga squeezed into her right ovary.
The healthy 6lb 3oz tot was safely delivered in a two-hour operation.
The condition – an ectopic pregnancy – can kill both mother and child.
Only a handful of babies have ever survived it, when born after the full nine months. But amazingly little Durga stayed healthy.
Meera’s condition was caused by the egg not travelling down the Fallopian tube into the uterus and staying in the ovary.
But she showed no usual symptoms of a pregnancy outside the womb.
Such symptoms usually include severe pain and bleeding early on.
Meera, 34, had the usual morning sickness, discomfort and nausea.
But her ultrasound scans at regular check-ups never showed anything unusual.
One in 40,000 pregnancies is ectopic and many are identified early on.
Most mothers abort the baby in the early stages, with many being rushed to hospital after collapsing.
But Meera defied science after arriving at the hospital in Darwin, Australia, on Thursday with her husband Ravi.
The mum of two said: “I feel like the luckiest woman in the world.
“I didn’t know anything about the ovarian pregnancy until I woke up after the Caesarean and the doctors told me.”
Obstetrician Andrew Miller said she was lucky the ovary had not ruptured as the baby grew and stretched the membrane.
He added that the ovary skin was so thin he could see the baby’s hair and facial features through it.
Dr Miller added: “It truly is a miracle.
“The skin could have ruptured at any moment, leaving both mother and baby’s lives at risk.
“This form of pregnancy is rare enough, but to have it go full term is unheard of. I have never come across it. She is extraordinarily lucky.”
Dr Miller said that if the ectopic pregnancy had been detected in the early stages Meera would have been advised to abort her child.
Women who experience an ectopic pregnancy have an increased chance of having another.
Baby Durga – which means goddess in Hindi – has a six-year-old sister called Gayatri.
